Dance

Creating a Short Story

Students who are new to dance will be instructed to create a short story through movement. They will be encouraged to choreograph a short dance will be encouraged to use props in addition to movement to extend their story. This will prove to them that they actually can dance although they haven’t really learned it yet.

Lesson plan:

- get into group of 4 or 5 people

- they will have 10 minutes to plan

- find props in classroom

- pick genre to dance to

- plan choreograph

- present at the end of class
- after everyone is done, each group will write down on a piece of paper what their guess is for each group (I.e. what they think the group is trying to represent)

At the end, each group will create a collage with pictures that they find or bring to class that will portray their dance. Teachers will supply some magazines and crafts utensils. Students are encouraged to bring in anything extra to help their work.

 Social Studies

My Family Tree

Lesson Plan – Plan Created for Second Graders

·        Objective:  Psycho-social research has shown that students from minority ethnic backgrounds can      benefit from learning more about their history and culture. By teaching students about where their      family and ancestors come from, they can begin to build stronger senses of self-worth which will        in turn enable them to better cope with the social pressures of the cultural climate in the United            States.
·        Incorporation of the Arts:  It is our objective to have students fully engage in the idea of learning     about their racial/ethnic backgrounds. By having them create an art project we are encouraging           students who learn in a multitude of different ways by incorporating various teaching techniques         spelt out in the V.A.K.T. model.

Project

·        Materials:
o   Poster Board
o   Markers
o   Stickers
o   Magazines/Family Photos
§  Culturally representative magazines. Relevant to the student population we are dealing with.
o   Glue Sticks
o   Tape
o   Scissors
o   Leaves/Tree Branches
§  Students will collect these from outside.

Ambiance:

·        Class held in the Arboretum
o   So that students can collect their own natural materials
·        Teacher will garments specific to their culture
o   Students encouraged to wear that they feel represents themselves or their familial background
·        Teacher will provide food specific to culture of neighborhoods surrounding school
o   Ex. Fingalicking, Vicky’s, Havana Harry’s
·        Picnic Blankets/ Tapestry
o   For students to sit on outside

Method:

·        Students will work individually
o   However it will be encouraged for them to interact with students to help facilitate learning about other cultures

Assessment:

·    The instructor should not be looking to see whether or not what the students created was aesthetically pleasing or covered any specific aspect of the students cultural background.

·    Reflection:
o   Each student will be asked to provide one aspect of the day that they enjoyed/made them feel good about their project. As long as each student can do that the project should be viewed as successful.

Health and Wellness

Healthy Eating

Objective: To teach healthy eating habits and recreational exercise routines

How? :

We will introduce a wellness plan to the children.
We will begin with nutritional facts, for example what is best to eat.
We will give examples of better nutritional options of what to eat, such as vegetables and protein, rather than processed foods with unhealthy chemicals, sugar, and fat.
Also, we will teach them simple and easy exercise routines to keep the body in movement and in shape.

After introducing the information and routines, they will put this in a collage, which will demonstrate that they understood what was previously explained.
They will be provided with magazines and they must cut and paste healthy foods and exercise related pictures.
This would add the creative and visual touch to the lesson and will make it more interactive

Health And Wellness

Lesson Plan: How Health Can Be Fun!
·         Our classroom was designed for 4th and 5th graders and should take place over the course of about a week
·         Teaching about nutrition and physical activity while catering to all type of learners (visual, kinesthetic, audio and reading/writing)
·         The first part class is outside and should feel like everyone’s favorite gym class or a structured recess
·         The goal of the first half is to teach the kids 3-4 fun activities they can do outside with or without friends. We want them to get off the phone and away from the TV.
·         The kids would be split into either 3 or 4 groups depending on class size and how many activities we have. Each group would try out a new activity and every 15-20 minutes they switch
·         At the end, we would have a big conversation about everyone’s favorite game and they would have the chance to write it down.
·         The next part of class would be inside and the children would learn 3-4 healthy and fun recipes that were safe to make at home that didn’t involve the stove.
·         Again they would be split in groups and there would be different stations set up around the classroom with the different foods to make.
·         Each groups visits every station for about 20-30 minutes

·         At the end they get a recipe book that they get to customize and decorate

Social Studies

Diversity

Activity: Find examples of diversity in magazines note

Participants: Angela Moon, Amanda Clichy-Silva, Destiny Washington, Danielle McIntosh, Alexia Hirlemann, and Xinbei Huang

Introduction: The lecture is about the prominence of diversity everywhere we go. For example, we can find diversity in the workplace, in the educational systems, in culture, religion, and in the social environment. It is important to recognize these diversities’ but to not allow diversity to exclude or make one feel underrepresented.

Student interaction: allow students to discuss where they see diversity in their day-to-day lives

Examples provided by professor:
·         Politicians: Hilary Clinton ran for president
·         Corporate world: Mary Barra is now the CEO of General Motors
·         Body image “social”: Ashley Graham plus size model makes cover of Sports Illustrated

Concluding message: Make sure students understand all people are equal regardless of one’s differences and teach them the importance of appreciating all the diversity of the world.

Reflection/ Student interaction:Allow students to present their images

Comments

  1. I thought this lesson was a fun way to get kids to think about things for themselves. Having them find examples of the lessons we just went over proves they understood it and that they can recognize it in the real world. - Alexia Hirlemann

  2. The family tree is a great opportunity to combine different lessons (plants and trees with family relationships). I like that students have the opportunity to collect their project materials from the outdoors because it reemphasizes the idea that nature is art and art is all around us.
