ADHD, Scientology and Arabic Language

Nate, Tiff and Sally presented three very dissimilar lessons that generated genuine interest. Nate addressed an important diagnosis that affect a great percentage of our children, Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD). Tiff introduced the class to Scientology from a Religious Studies/Social Science point of view. Sally brought to class Arabic, its origin, its diversity, its alphabet and sounds.

Feedback

"About Nate (ADhD): This lesson was extremely interesting because people should know that this is a thing and they should know how to treat it. I like that he was honest and shared with us his own experiences. About Tiffany: It was good, I didn’t know about this religion." Fortuna

"Nate’s topic was good and interesting. I liked how he talked about ADHD and how clear he was while presenting it to the class. The activity at the end was also good. Tiffany’s topic was really interesting. Sally’s topic was really interesting. I’ve always thought that Arabic is hard and now I have the proof that is super hard!" Lucy

"If I do say so myself the lessons today were amazing!!! Nate’s was so informative about adhd and he had fun teaching so the class had fun while also learning. Sally’s lesson was fun because I know how to speak the Arabic dialect of Lebanese but I can’t write at all, so this was fun!! I love learning more about my culture! Tiff

"In class today we learn about different subjects. Nate teach us about ADHD, which I thinks is something everyone needs to know about, but maybe he can have realize activities like to see if you have it or not. The other class was about Scientology, it was very interesting, something very different that any of us know about before. The last class about Arabic, we learn about the Arabic language which it is something very difficult, I think it was unique and fun." Carmen

"The first lesson plan about ADHD was interesting because we got to learn more about the condition, how it works, and it is also a personal subject for the presenter which always makes it more easy going and engaging. I think it is a key subject for students to learn about because of the high rates of students with the condition! Great lesson. The Scientology lesson was also interesting because it is a topic that I believe most of us have heard about but don’t really know what it is or conveys. Also, with the work sheet, we got to learn fun facts about it which is always fun and makes the class more active. The third lesson about Arabic was great, because none of us speak that language and the teacher clearly knew the topic though it is a hard and different one. It is very risky but still fun and creative to learn." Ana

"Nate: I really like the presentation and how he felt comfortable with the topic. ADHD is something we should all be aware of, and it should be taught to everyone in order to be inclusive. I do believe, though, that people with ADHD can do anything they want to do. Tiffany: really cool topic. Learning about Scientology and the cases of celebrities that have or are involved in it is really cool. I have heard of it before, but I have never thought of all of the background of it and the different consequences if you decide to leave. Sally: very cool to learn a little Arabic. It made me realize that it is much harder than what I thought, but the sounds of the letters are somehow similar to what we all know." Isabella

"Today’s class I learned about ADHD, Scientology, and Arabic. So for me, the three were totally new interesting topics. Overall very interesting because its important to know that some kids were born with the ADHD defect, that there is a new religion out there that can be dangerous, and a total new language to add culture to myself. Great class." Myra

"All the topics today were new and interesting. ADHD and the Church of Scientology are topics that I have heard about before but did not know much about in detail. I like that learning about these topics made us more knowledgeable to help us with situations we may encounter in our daily lives outside the classroom. Learning about the Arabic language definitely made me more appreciative of people who speak Arabic and other languages because it seems so difficult and different than English. I wish people would take more time out to appreciate and learn more about people and cultures different from their own. That is why lessons like these are so important." Danielle

"I like how Nate discussed a topic that sometimes can have a stigma around it and he helped us understand that kids with ADHD can still do everything like everyone else. Tiffany’s presentation about Scientology was so interesting because it was something I wanted to learn more about. It was really unique that Sally taught us Arabic because it is very different than any other language and I loved getting to practice a new language." Angela

"ADHD: I found this presentation really interesting. It was nice that he included the students throughout his presentation. Scientology: This class was so cool! Definitely going home and watching the HBO documentary. Arabic: This class was really great, I had never learned Arabic before. I liked the worksheet where we got to write out some of the Arabic letters." Kyra

"Nate's lesson was interesting and relevant to our day and age. I like that he brought up the fact that there is controversy about whether ADHD is diagnosed too much or is even real at all! The activities were fun (Hanoi table) and his lesson brought up debate. Tiffany's Scientology lesson was so interesting! I had never known what it was really about and I really enjoyed learning about it. It really engaged the audience. I will definitely be watching the documentary she suggested. Sally's lesson was cool and different. It made me feel like I was in kindergarten again writing letters. I'm glad she was able to teach us about something that is a big part of her life." Mackenzie

"On Wednesday, April 18th we were taught lectures on Arabic, Scientology and ADHD. During the Arabic lecture, I learned how to write my name in Arabic and how to speak the alphabet in this language. In the Scientology lecture, I learned the origins of this "religion" and also some famous persons who are practicing members. The ADHD lecture provided knowledge of what professions are disadvantageous for people with ADHD as well as some professions that would be advantageous." Masai

"I learned that in Arabic you read from right to left, which is uncommon. I also learned how to write my name. A.D.H.D is a disease that most people do not know a lot about, there are a lot of misconceptions. It can also serve as an advantage in some jobs. Scientology is craaazy. I was surprised to learn that you cannot speak with your family if they leave the church. I also learned about how it was started." Tommy

Suggestions

I felt that Tiff was a little fast while explaining but it was good. About Sally: This lesson was different from others. Maybe she could talk a little to see how Arabic sounds all together.

Sally was going too fast and it was not easy for some people to follow her. Also, because of the same reason, I wast able to fully understand what Scientology is.

The lessons could implement more art.
