Passion: Panama, Italy and the Spanish Language
Today, a trio of women taught us three lessons. Ana taught very interesting ideas about Spanish, her native language; Isabella introduced us to the details of the historic Panama Canal, located in her country, and Lucy shared with us how proud she is to be an Italian and everything about it, from geography, to monuments, to food and art.

LESSON PLAN
I. OBJECTIVE
To raise the students’ awareness of what Italy offers
through the fun learning of its monuments, cuisine and language.
LANGUAGE: English and Italian
MATERIALS: PowerPoint Slides, Pictures, Map, Words, Computer
II. KEY THEATER VOCABULARY (_-_ min.)
Italia, Nord, Centro, Sud, Fontana di Trevi, Ghirlandina,
Duomo Santa Maria Del Fiore, Canal Grande, la Cattedrale, Pompeii, Il Duomo di
Siracusa, Risotto, Parmigiano, Carbonara, tortellini, tortelloni, caprese,
pizza Margherita, Fiorentina.
III. PROCEDURE
(LESSON SEQUENCE
Introduction of Italy
and why it is important to learn about it; explanation of some details of the
Italian culture bringing up examples, such as monuments and then foods. Then
the teacher will give a brief explanation of how to say correctly the names of
many famous Italian dishes as proceeding to the food topic. Then the students
will be involved in a group activity.
IV. MOTIVATION (10__ min.)
It is important for
kids to learn about new cultures and languages because it makes them broaden
their horizons.
V. PRESENTATION OF LESSON (25__ min.)
Introduction, reasons why you want to know about Italy,
examples of some of the most important monuments and foods, kids get in groups,
group activity.
VI. REVIEW, GUIDED PRACTICE and/or
INDEPENDENT PRACTICE (_35_ min.)
Group activity. Kids will get into groups and will
collaborate with each other in order to find out what the right answer is.
VI. ASSESSMENT
So if you guys had
the chance to pick a place to go to, which one would that be?
How do you say the dish made of mozzarella and tomatoes?
VII. FOLLOW – UP EXTENSIONS AND HOME LEARNING
Think about what we did today and for next time think about
which Italian city would be your favorite one to go visit one day!
VIII. REFLECTION
I think that kids today learned about dealing with new
words. They maybe thought about being in one of the places I showed today. They
will maybe keep some of the things they learned today for their future.
